Episode Description
I remember wondering why the committee ignored my suggestion yet got excited when a man made the same suggestion. When I told a male colleague, he said it must have been the way I said it. Blaming me as opposed to societal biases toward women is another example of the challenges women face. Even in the U.S. Supreme Court, female justices are interrupted four times more often than their male counterparts and 96% of the time they are interrupted by men. The U.S. constitutional amendment giving women equal legal rights took 100 years to be approved by Congress. Not only is it shocking that it took until 2022 for this to happen, but it was almost completely ignored in the media, as if it weren’t important at all. These attitudes are engrained early by teachers who expect more from boys than girls and give boys more encouragement. The result is that the potential of half of the population is underused. This hurts all of us. Please join us Thursday to learn how we can address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all: men and women alike.
