Derek W. Black
Derek W. Black is a Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law and the author of "Ending Zero Tolerance: The Crisis of Absolute School Discipline." Professor Black has also taught at the University of North Carolina School of Law and American University Washington College of Law. Beyond teaching, has been active in various outside endeavors, including serving as pro bono counsel in civil rights cases, a consultant to civil rights campaigns, and a member of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team. In his book, "Ending Zero Tolerance: The Crisis of Absolute School Discipline", Derek shows the common practice of removing kids from school is counterproductive not only to their own academic, psychological, and career outcomes, but also to their peers’ educational outcomes. He suggests the solution is for courts to reengage in school discipline, enforce students’ rights, and support broader reforms.
