John Shaw Ph. D.
John Shaw is currently Director of Health and Mental Health for Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare at Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services. He began working as a counselor in child welfare during college, and has dedicated his professional career to disadvantaged inner city children and families in the child welfare and public mental health systems of New York City since 1979. His work expanded from clinical psychology to community building through Agenda for Children Tomorrow and became the chair of the Mott Haven Chapter in 1996 where he served for 6 years. In recent years his identities as a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and musician have combined to establish a Creative Arts Treatment program at Sheltering Arms integrating DBT treatment principles with music, visual art, and dance to engage and promote healing creativity for youth and their families. By far his greatest joys are his two daughters and five granddaughters.
