Francis McHie
In 1929, as a black HS graduate, Francis McHie, applied to & was rejected from the U of MN Nursing program BECAUSE she was black. Her mentor, Gertrude Brown, took her to the MN Legislature to tell her story. She was immediately admitted to the school & became the first black woman to graduate from the school in 1932.That same year, she earned a BS Degree from the School of Education. Her life became a series of Firsts: first black employed by Minneapolis General Hospital as supervisor of outpatient clinic; the first black to work with Visiting Nurses Association in New Orleans, LA; one of 12 nurses who broke color barrier at Herman Kiefer Hospital in Detroit, MI; McHie served as Associate Professor & assistant to the Director of the School of Nursing at Tuskegee Institute & Nashville’s’ Meharry Medical College & DON for their Hubbard Hospital.
