Stephen Downing Resume Stephen Downing is a twenty year veteran and former LAPD deputy chief of police; a writer of over 230 hours of television; and the producer of over 220 hours of series television, having served as executive producer\writer\showrunner on three television series: "MacGyver," “Robocop,” and “Fx-The Series.” The Cop Downing began his police career in a squad car and finished as a deputy chief of police. His assignments covered a vast range of specialization and command including patrol, detectives, narcotics, vice, and personnel and training. The Writer While a member of the LAPD, Downing also freelanced as a television writer. His credits during that period of his writing career include many hour dramas ranging from Dragnet, Police Story and Kojac to the television movies "Crisis in Mid-Air," “Terror in the Towers,” “Command in Hell,” the pilot and multiple episodes of "Sierra" and the mini series adaptation of John Jakes novel, "The Rebels". By the time Downing retired from the LAPD in 1980 he had written 230 hours of prime time television. The Producer In the 38 years since leaving the LAPD Downing has written and produced five television series. "McClain's Law,” "T.J. Hooker," "MacGyver," “Robocop,” and “Fx The Series.” During that period he also wrote four television movies and five pilots; three of which were series spin-offs. He is currently semi-retired, writing for the big screen. The Activist For the past ten years Downing has served on the Board of Directors of the “Law Enforcement Action Partnership” (LEAP) a non-profit made up of criminal justice professionals working to end the war on drugs and to bring about reform to the harms the criminal justice system has imposed upon society. The Family Man Downing and his wife of 61 years, Adrienne, live in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach, California. They have three adult children and six grandchildren. 2 Their son, Michael, is the father of two daughters and recently retired as the deputy chief of Counter Terrorism for the LAPD while his wife, Michelle does double duty as mother and real estate agent. Their daughter Tambree works as a medical professional and their youngest, Julie, lives in Nashville with her husband, Hank, who recently retired as asst. chief of police in Culver City, CA. The youngest of their six grandchildren is Molly, 18 a recent high school graduate who will be attending the University of Oregon in the fall. The others are all college grads; Megan, a commercial estate professional is married to Taylor, living in Nashville. Henry, still a bachelor, works as a HR professional in Nashville. Tess, graduated from Belmont University last year, manages a country western singer-songwriter in Nashville; Morgan works as a real estate professional in Visalia CA married to Steve, a Top Gun Navy fighter pilot. Mallory an airline attendant, recently married Hunter Brown, a commercial real estate professional. Updated June 2020
