Lesley Carroll
Lesley Carroll is the Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, a job which she cherishes as an opportunity to bring hope to those who experience a loss of voice and respect. She investigates complaints from prisoners and deaths in custody including post-release deaths. Lesley Carroll has always had a strong vocation to help bring healing and peace to her community. This led her into the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and she was ordained in 1988. She ministered in three congregations in deeply divided communities on the North side of Belfast for nearly 30 years. She is a natural leader and worked with people from across the community, to increase understanding, end conflict and seek reconciliation. She was a member of the government appointed Consultative Group in dealing with Northern Ireland’s troubled past which reported in 2009. She was a member of the Victims and Survivors Forum, 2012-2014 and Deputy Chief Commissioner at the Equality Commission NI 2016-2019.
