Brooke Walters

I grew up in Mesa, Arizona, the oldest of five children. Even as a small child, I enjoyed pushing my own personal boundaries and competing hard at whatever task was put in front of me. I was drawn to inspiring stories and characters in History. I married Cory Jenkins, a newly minted officer in the US Army and a physician assistant, in 2007. We promptly moved to his duty station in beautiful, but insufferably rainy, Fort Lewis, Washington. All that time indoors during bad weather taught me that I love to write. I discovered that I never feel more alive than when I am putting to words the thoughts and feelings in my heart. We had our baby girl a year and a half later and Cory deployed to Afghanistan five weeks later. Before I even had the chance to receive my first letter from him, an Army Chaplain appeared at my front door and informed me that my husband was "believed to have been killed in action." Those words began a journey that was never in my plan, but that I wouldn't give up for the world. As I struggled to navigate through the stages of my grief, I learned how to heal, how to forgive, and how to surrender to a plan bigger than my own. And true to form, I used writing to help me through the process. In 2021, I completed my memoir "Coming Home" about my experience of love and loss. I have remarried an amazing man, a widower himself, and we currently reside in Utah. We are the parents of five children. Find Brooke online at: https://www.instagram.com/brookewalters82.
