Not far from Oprah’s famed Harpo studies is this beautiful west loop Aveda Concept Salon, 900 West Jackson is the exact address. Opened October 2008, this has become “The Place” for intimate fashions shows. All the stations are movable making great use of the 3,000 square feet of space at night. The built in bar, high tech sound system, large flat screen and bi-level spa make it the hot new choice for innovative events. The diverse cliental is sprinkled with colorful professional woman, Elite Agency Models revamping their looks, students, moms, wives and busy woman getting their hair done as they work on lap tops with the Salon’s free internet. The “Diva Carpet Treatment” is what Kim Shackelford owner of Asili Chi strives to give every customer. How did she come to create such a refreshing atmosphere? Asili means “ New Beginnings” in Swahili and Chi is her late Mom’s name. Both of Kim’s parents were murdered in a robbery in Champaign, IL. After taking off a year Kim said “I decided to follow a passion in my heart. It’s Beauty, Fashion, Art, Music.” The salon was her therapy as a 15 month long murder investigation climaxed into three emotionally exhausting trials (lasting two years) In Feb 2010, the last suspect was sentenced to life in prison. Now is the time for new beginnings for everyone. With great pride Kim sighs and says “Asili Chi reminds me of the work ethic, community service and love that my parents always stood for. That love is what I give to every customer every day. I know I have an impact on shaping the lives of the 27 staff members handpicked to deliver my Diva Experience. What I love most is seeing my staff leave work at the end of the day satisfied that the job (of shaping lives) was done.
