Episode Description
It is estimated that seven in ten girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members. 75% of girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities such as disordered eating, cutting, bullying, smoking, or drinking when feeling bad about themselves (compared to 25% of girls with high self-esteem). Michael Lawrience, after thirteen years of working with teens, has written Self-Esteem: A Teen’s Guide for Girls to address this issue of and give girls the necessary tools to help them raise their self esteem and their self confidence. We will discuss the pressures society puts on girls to look and act in certain ways and what we can do to help them develop a healthy body image and become secure, self confident young women.
The Self Improvement Show
Archives Available on VoiceAmerica Empowerment Channel
The Self Improvement Show was created because almost everyone wants to be better, do better, and achieve more, but we don't always know how to do that. We aren't looking for perfection. We are simply trying to improve in ways that allow us more happiness, contentment and success with some laughter along the way. We address issues common to us all and suggest useful tools that will help you tap into your strengths and your wonderful uniqueness. We think most self improvement is an "inside job" so we talk a lot about how to "go within" to make lasting changes. We talk to people who have struggled and won and have great stories to tell as well as those who live ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. The show is laid back, informative and down to earth. The welcome mat is always out and we invite you to join us.
Dr. Irene Conlan
Dr. Irene Conlan is serious about helping you find the tools you need to achieve your self improvement goals and begin to experience the happiness you deserve and desire.
She has a Masters degree in nursing and a Ph.D. in metaphysics. Irene has taught nursing at ASU, served as Administrator of Nursing at a major Phoenix hospital, and served as Assistant Director in the Arizona Department of Health Services. A certified hypnotherapist, Irene has had her own therapy practice for the past 16 years.
Irene believes that in this stressful world we need help more than ever. We rush from one place to the next, to work, the store, to appointments, to get our kids to soccer practice, ballet, gymnastics, school or the mall. We can be found 24/7 by email, cell phone, or pager. We are stretched to the max and wonder why we can’t sleep, can’t think, and can’t relax. We are enticed by drugs, alcohol and sex to give us an outlet or deal with the stress and many choose to use them. Some rage. Some over-exercise. Some go out and shoot other people. Some simply quit.
In this frenetic activity there is one constant – we are each looking for happiness. Ask the addict, the thief, the anorexic, the debutante, the CEO, service professionals, people you meet on the street or while shopping – ask them what they want. They will, if they can verbalize it, tell you what they truly want is happiness.
Let’s talk about the improvements we can make that help us be happy now.
